Ishrat Husain

Ishrat Husain took over as the Dean and the Director of the oldest Business school outside North America in March 2008. Before that he served as the Chairman, National Commission with the status of Federal Minister for two years reporting directly to the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan. The Commission produced a two volume report on governance reforms in Pakistan During 2005-06 he was appointed by the Board of IMF as a member of a three person panel to evaluate the IEO and was also a member of the Mahathir Commission 2020 vision for the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). He also advised the IDB for creating its poverty reduction fund. He is currently a member of the IMF Advisory Group on the Middle East and UNDP Regional Advisory Group on Asia and Pacific. Ishrat Husain obtained Master’s degree in Development Economics from Williams College and Doctorate in Economics from Boston University in 1978. He is a graduate of Executive Development program jointly sponsored by Harvard, Stanford and INSEAD. |

Mr. Samir Ahmed took over as Managing Director of NCEL in August 2009. Mr. Samir Ahmed has held various management positions in the Financial Sector since 1983, including International Banking, Investment Banking, Capital Markets and Financial Regulation. In addition to Pakistan he has worked in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.His most recent assignment before NCEL was as CEO of IGI Investment Bank from 2004 to 2009. IGI is Pakistan’s largest investment bank with a paid up capital of more than Rs2 billion and is listed on all 3 stock exchanges in Pakistan. Before that he served as CEO/Managing Director of the Lahore Stock Exchange from 2001 to2004, where he led an extensive market reform process, working closely with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. From 1999 to 2001 he worked for the Government of Dubai as Senior Advisor to Dubai Financial Market. He was a senior member of the team that set up DFM, UAE’s first stock market, which became operational in 2000. He spent 5 years in the equity brokerage industry, including the period 1995 to 1998 when he headed the equities business of ING Barings in Pakistan. He started his career in international commercial banking and stayed in this field for 10 years, working in Pakistan and Asia Pacific regions. Mr. Ahmed has a Bachelors degree in Economics from University of Chicago and a Masters degree from London Business School. |

Zafar M Sheikh

A successful career spanned over three decades of International and domestic Banking with expertise in treasury and fund management in both Conventional and Islamic Banking. He is an expert in setting up, organizing, managing and developing institutions in the Government and Non Government sector mainly to develop various Capital Debt Market Products / financial strategy to improve distress Balance Sheets. He served in Dubai, London and New York. He was treasurer of three banks in Dubai and responsible to setup in new bank in Dubai. Presently he is heading the National Savings Organization, Ministry of Finance, Pakistan- The organization, with a portfolio of PKR 1,600 Billion (Equivalent to US $ 19 Billion ) a network of 400 offices across the country managed by staff of 3700, is a major source of non-bank borrowing. Since his being at the helm of affairs, the organization set new records of investments i.e. as against the target of PKR 43 billion in 2007-08 to PKR 89.6 billion and again in 2008-09 PKR 270 Billion against the target of PKR 150 Billion. He has at his credit the launch of IT project aimed at replacing the manual operations being followed for the last 60 years. Most recently he managed the launch “National Savings Bonds” – the first ever 100% scrip less bond in the country, tradable on all three bourses. He also served as Additional Director General, Debt Management, Ministry of Finance during from 2005 to 2007, where he was responsible to formulate the Government policies on Domestic/External Debt. Before Joining his services as an Advisor to Governor State Bank of Pakistan on Foreign Exchange and Debt Management he was head of wealth management of a bank in Dubai.. Under his management at SBP, the country had achieved the highest level of Foreign Exchange Reserves in its history in addition to the stability in the exchange rates. Additionally, he introduced and developed the KIBOR, a benchmark rate. During the period the interest rate remained low achieving resultantly the highest growth in the economy. |

Earlier Mr. Shakil Rizvi also served DSE while he was Vice - President in 2009. Mr. Md. Shakil Rizvi, well-known personality in the country’s Securities market, has been associated with the country’s oldest and prime bourse over the last 25 years. He has hailed from Muradnagar village of Brahmanbaria district. Mr. Rizvi was elected director in the year 2004 and continued his position till 2006. Besides, he was the president of DSE members’ club. During his tenure, he made significant contributions in the overall development of capital market. Mr. Rizvi is the Managing Director of Shakil Rizvi Stock Ltd. Mr. Rizvi is engaged in many social welfare activities. Mr. Zubyr Soomro
|
Zubyr Soomro joined Citibank N.A. Pakistan as a Management Associate after degrees from the London School of Economics and the School of African and Oriental Studies. He has held a number of senior positions before taking over as Citi Country Officer (CCO) and Managing Director for Pakistan, a position he retired from in April 2008.
Zubyr has rich global banking experience and has worked in senior capacities in Jordan- where he was Country Officer with additional responsibility for Iraq and Syria- in Saudi Arabia as Head of Contracting Division for SAMBA, in Turkey as Chief Executive SAMBA and in London initially as Head for Middle East, Africa (UK) and later for Emerging Markets (UK) for Citibank’s Private Banking business. In 1997, Zubyr took a leave of absence from Citibank to move back to Pakistan as President & Chairman of United Bank Limited (wholly owned by the Government of Pakistan). Over 2½ years the bank was substantially restructured and restored to profitability and is now privatized. He re-joined Citi in February 2000 and stayed there as Country Officer and in addition was subsequently elevated to Pakistan Division Head. In his career at Citi he assisted in conducting business and risk reviews for the institution in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Brazil, Japan, the UK, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and the Global Power industry. In December 2004 Zubyr was awarded the Quaid-e-Azam Centenary Gold Medal by the State Bank of Pakistan in recognition for his work in the successful privatization of United Bank Limited as well as his role in financial sector reform where, as Chairman of the Pakistan Banks Association, he was actively involved in the process of restructuring and deregulation of the banking system. This award had only been given three times before since its inception in 1976, the last time being in 1981. |

Ltd, a well established and leading private business entity in the fisheries industry of the Maldives catering their products into a number of international markets including the EU. Mr. Rasheed is educated in the field of Business Administration with specialization majors in International Business and Management from University of Technology, Sydney , Australia and encompasses wide experience in overall management of fisheries business in the turbulent and changing international markets. His special areas of interest in regard to his career includes Training Management, Human Resource Management , implementation of infrastructure development projects and management of the fisheries industry of the Maldives. He has held key positions in Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), a state owned enterprise in the Maldives before starting his career in the private sector. |

Mr. Alam has over 20 years of experience in the financial sector. His current assignment as CEO AKD Securities is to head a talented young team of professionals to rise to the occasion in prevailing tough conditions. The company has the honor of winning the prestigious CFA Association of Pakistan award for Best Brokerage House for two consecutive years 2005-06 and 2006-2007. The Investment Banking Division of AKD Securities is considered to be one of the most active and innovative in the financial sector. Mr. Alam also oversees AKD Group financials in consort with CEOs of the respective group companies. Before joining AKD Securities in 2007, Mr. Alam was working first as the Head of Mutual Funds Division and then as the Head of Treasury at Pakistan Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation (PICIC). Under his dynamic leadership, the Net Asset Value (NAV) of the funds grew at a very healthy pace, beating the KSE- 100 Index and other parameters set by the management. Mr. Alam gauged the appetite of the market and raised over Rs. 3.4 billion during 2003-04 through right issues by first convincing the board of directors and then the investors; the successful mobilization of resources set a new trend in closed end funds. Mr. Alam also reorganized ICP SEMF under NBFC Rules 2003 and managed floatation of two new funds. Mr. Alam acted as the Domestic Consultant for Asian Development Bank on Financial Sector Intermediation Loan (FSIL), during 2004. The assignment included review and reporting on various policies and procedures agreed by the Government of Pakistan with ADB. These related mainly to monetary policy, foreign exchanges, money and capital markets. |

Mr. S. Gulrez Yazdani is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Institute of Capital Markets. Before joining the Institute, he was the Executive Director in Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan primarily covering international relations and treaties, development of new primary legislations, enabling rules and implementing mechanism. At SECP he was responsible for coordination with regulatory bodies of different jurisdictions/laws and also looking after other areas like corporate governance, anti-money laundering and capacity building projects in capital markets. Previously, he has also served as the Executive Director in State Life Insurance Corporation headed the Investments, Overseas, and Systems divisions of the Corporation. Prior to that, Mr. Yazdani was the Joint Secretary in Ministry of Commerce, heading the WTO Wing which required consultations with stakeholders, and development of negotiating strategies. The work included development of substantive laws, framing of the enabling regulations and creation of the required institutional structures to implement these laws. Also, he worked as the Joint Secretary in Ministry of Communications looking after infrastructure development in Pakistan particularly roads, ports and shipping. He was also the Counsellor/GATT Affairs, Permanent Mission of Pakistan, Geneva, Bilateral trade promotion and represented Pakistan in Uruguay Round of MTNs with focus on issues relating to intellectual property (TRIPS), TRIMS, market access, services, trade policy and rule making. |
